Summer Of Colour 4 Week 1

Heeelllloooo everyone!!

So it was the first week of Summer of colour! I was soooo excited to start this year and I'm so glad I decided to play as I'm having great fun already!!

The first colours that were chosen were Aqua Blue, Yellow pink! I LOVE bright colours so this was like a dream come true for me! I was totally ready to get stuck in only for this week to be one of the busiest weeks I've ever had!! It was getting on in the week and I still hadn't started EEK! Then i realised some crochet Grannie squares I had been working on were Aqua blue and a plan started to form............

I've been teaching myself to crochet recently! It's going pretty well but I now have about  a million granny squares with slight defects hanging around the place :-P I might make them in to a blanket just for fun so i can remember how terrible I was at it! Anyway, I decided I would use my granny squares for my first summer of colour! Sadly i didn't have any yellow wool on me so I had to improvise....

Ta-DA.....I have to be honest it's not the greatest thing I've ever done but by the time I got to the pink square I was actually producing granny squares without mistakes! Go me!!

I have a lot less things to do next week so hopefully my contribution will be a bit better!! Now I'm off to go practise some more crochet and have a nose at all the other lovely (and much better) contributions to The Summer Of Colour :-)

  11. A creative use of your granny squares. Looks like it didn't take long to make a good one.

You can do so much with crochet.

My grandmother taught me how to put crocheted edges on handkerchiefs, but as an adult I designed my own patterns for sweaters and vests, sometimes dyed my own yarn with vegetable dyes, and wove threads through the holes in the crochet. I had a great book on "hard crochet" and made a bunch of fedora-type hats. For an Easter "Eggshibit" I crocheted a soft-sculpture "hard cooked egg" sliced in half (stuffed with filling) and a crocheted knife to place between the pieces. Now, I just (occasionally) make scarves to match outfits.

Thanks for stopping to view my SOC post.

  15. I forgot I had posted images of a couple of crocheted pieces on my blog. You can find them here:

    and

(just to give you an idea of all the interesting things you can do with crochet)

Although I didn't post a photo, I also made a huge round "doily" to hang on the wall (about 30 inches in diameter). Because it was so soft, I cut a large piece of plexiglas, and drilled holes in it so I could stitch the "doily" onto it and attach a hanging wire. The plexiglas was nearly invisible under it.

I made it with various undyed wool yarns, all off-white, and attached fringe and some other long hanging pieces of yarn from the center.

  18. great improvisation for the colour trio and glad to hear you are keeping all your early squares - I find it so soul destroying to unravel something I've made even if it is not 'perfect'

  19. Clever you teaching yourself to crochet! You're one ahead of me there, it's something I'd love to be able to do but don't have the patience or brain power to learn, LOL!

Btw, please don't compare what you have done to other people's artwork, this SOC journey is all about enjoying doing what you do for YOU, and then sharing that passion with like minded people. We all learn from each other. You've shown here that you cleverly taught yourself crochet; maybe one day I'll give it a go (and I might ask you for some advice!). I've learned that comparing to others only ever leads to crashing disappointment, and how disheartening is that?! Looking forward to seeing what you do next week, Caz! xx

  27. Hi, thanks for visiting my blog. Sorry I am so late in getting around to visit yours. Summer can be a busy time...

I am very impressed that you are teaching yourself to crochet. All I can do is a basic chain stitch. :)

Your granny squares are so bright and cheerful. I'm sure they'll make a lovely blanket.
